Carbon capture plan for Peterhead

Two large energy firms have agreed to work together to develop carbon-capture and storage (CCS) in Aberdeenshire – if they can get the funding.
The UK government said it would hand over £1bn to develop CCS, which captures emissions from power stations and burying them under the sea bed.
A pilot project at Longannet in Fife was cancelled last month due to cost.
Now Shell and Scottish and Southern Energy want to develop the pioneering technology at Peterhead power station.

Carbon reduction matchmaking scheme launched

The UK Carbon Reporting Framework has been launched, which aims to help companies achieve their environmental goals by channelling millions of pounds into local schemes.
Developed in a partnership between BRE, British Airways, Deloitte and Forum for the Future, the Framework acts as a matchmaker between carbon reduction projects, such as community-owned renewable energy installations, and organisations wishing to support such projects in the UK.

90% have complied with CRC deadline

More than 90% of businesses have complied with the first CRC reporting deadline, new figures from the Environment Agency reveal.
A total of 4,295 reports, of an expected 4,549, have been received, reporting annual carbon dioxide emissions of over 60 million tonnes – more than 10% of the UK’s total annual carbon dioxide emissions.
The submitted reports are now being checked. The information provided will be used to compile the first CRC performance league table, which ranks organisations according to their energy efficiency. The league table will be published in Autumn 2011.

Forestry Commission launches woodland carbon accreditation scheme

Businesses that want to support the creation of UK woodlands and cut their carbon footprint at the same time, will now be able to do so with confidence thanks to the creation of the first Government approved woodland carbon accreditation scheme.

Ecotrocity and Welcome Break to offer free EV charging on motorways

A new scheme devised by British green energy company Ecotricity could put an end to range anxiety for electric car owners by providing charge points at service stations along UK motorways.
The national charging network, which is the first of its kind worldwide, will be free of charge to electric vehicle (EV) drivers and will consist of 27 charging points at Welcome Break service stations at its completion.
